Signing Up for VA Benefits
The United States Postal Service welcomes veterans to its ranks and provides some benefits like Veterans Preference on exams, the Military Buy Back program, a CDL Waiver application, and other recognition of Federal service.
The National Association of Letter Carriers offer veterans some benefits too, including membership in a Veterans group, a Veterans Guide, a newsletter and other recognition.
Recently, at the Mess Kit, we got a request from a Letter Carrier about how to get Veterans Administration benefits, so we thought we might mention a few of the procedures to enroll for medical benefits and find other information about receiving a Veteran ID card, eligibility for burial benefits, or other questions.
Your main point of contact for finding everything about benefits available to you from the Veterans Administration will be the website at VA.gov. You can also call 877-222-8387, Monday through Friday, 8am-8pm EST. The VA also has a phone app, which you might find easier, so search for it on your phone, VA Health and Benefits, and install it.
For initiating contact or preparing in advance for potential medical benefits, you can fill out the application online by creating an account on the VA website and filling out the fillable .PDF files titled: VA Form 10-10EZ or by stopping by a local VA Medical Center. You will need your Social Security Number, a copy of your DD214, as well as income information and your current medical insurance details.
If you have any specific questions, please feel free to contact Gary at the Branch 6000 Union office at 631-789-1616 or Dave at 718-640-3435.
