Happy New Year
I wanted to introduce myself to those of you who may not know me. My name is Patricia A. McDermott. I started as a letter carrier in September of 1994 at the Long Beach Post Office. I have been a member of the NALC since the start of my postal career.
In March 1997 I received the City of Long Beach Project Challenge, Phil Sheridan Community Service Award and Citations from local politicians Legislator Bruce Nyman, County Executive Thomas Gulotta, State Senator Dean G. Skelos.
In March 1997, I also received from the postal service a Certificate of Award recognizing LI Postal Women from the Postal Service.
In January of 2009 when Tom Kelly became a full time officer for NALC Branch 6000 and was the area representative for the Long Beach Post Office, I expressed wanting to become more active with the union as an advocate for carriers.
I was elected Shop Steward of the Long Beach Post Office in 2012 and still serving as shop steward of Long Beach. I appreciate and thank the carriers involved in the Long Beach Post Office for all their support. I have also been involved as a representative of the Branch as a Customer Connect Coordinator, Food Drive Coordinator, Safety Captain, On the Job Carrier Instructor and committee member for the Local Memorandum of Understanding negotiations in 2013 and beyond.
I have attended since 2012 congressional forums as a member of the NALC that the Long Island Federation of Labor has sponsored. I also served as the Branches Liaison for Congresswoman Kathleen Rice in 2020. In December 2014, I became part of the Executive Board for Branch 6000 and was a Trustee, then Editor for the Limb , City Delivery/Safety Captain and now elected Area Rep. I have been a delegate since 2014 to the NALC’s National and State conventions. I have attended many of the workshops offered at both the National and State conventions looking to gain more knowledge that will help me represent fellow letter carriers. I also served as a Carrier Academy Instructor for the Long Island District Postal Service, EEO Branch Representative for Redress. I attended and Completed the National NALC training session for Formal Step A and Beyond in October 2016. I have worked for the National as OWCP E-Comp Rep, Caser Streeter Detail Representative, and presently I am the DLT NALC for TIAREAP.
Outside the Postal Service, I love participating in the Community helper visits for The City of Long Beach Youth and Family services as well as the Pre-k classes at West End School.
Thank you and I look forward to my elected position as NALC Branch 6000 Area Rep.
Yours in Unity.
