Respect in the Workplace

What is Respect?  The word respect comes from the Latin word “respectus”, meaning esteem, regard or consideration.

Respect is something that is earned, not something that is automatically given. Respect is one of the most important traits in the workplace.  It helps people to work together to accomplish goals. Employees need to be respected in order for Managers to receive respect from them.

Respect can be the action of treating people with appreciation and dignity.  Both employers (managers) and employees should give respect to each other and to their peers.  This can create a more positive work environment for everyone involved.  Why is respect important?  Well, without it, interpersonal relationships can be filled with conflict and dissatisfaction.  If we don’t respect others, they will not respect us; or if we don’t respect ourselves, we will not be respected by others either.  This action helps to increase our self-esteem, self-efficacy, mental health, and well-being.

What does it take to just say “Good Morning” when entering the workroom floor.  And, most importantly, speaking to others as you would want to be spoken to.  There are no children on the workroom floor, so don’t speak to anyone as though they are.  Yes, communication is very important, and helps to build respect!  Remember, respect is earned by all!  A position does not demand respect.  Control does not demand respect.  Intimidation does not demand respect.  Respect is earned.

Respect also reduces stress; increases productivity; improves employee satisfaction; creates a fair environment.

Every workplace is unique.  Employers and employees can show respect in different ways.  Universal ways to show and improve levels of respect in the workplace is to:

·       Listen to what people have to say

·       Recognize the strengths and accomplishments of others

·       Pay attention to nonverbal communication

·       Practice common courtesy and politeness

·       Prevent bias

·       Consider how other view you and your actions

Also Show Respect by:

·       Staying calm, don’t shout

·        Don’t use negative labels or insults

·       Apologize when you are wrong

·       Treat others the way you want to be treated

·       Speak positively

·       Surround yourself with the right people

·       Defend yourself against disrespect

·       Develop assertiveness

·       Boost your self-esteem

·       Respect yourself
